Case study WEDTF

Women Entrepreneurial Development Trust Fund (WEDTF) is a Non-Governmental Organization operating in Zanzibar. The NGO carries out its operations in Zanzibar and its head office is located at Angoza building, block 2299, Mwanakwerekwe Street, Zanzibar.

Since it is a member-based organization, WEDTF mobilizes savings from its local members and uses it to provide loans to its members.

As at 31 December 2011, the NGO’s clients were 4,126, with savings amounting to TZS 72 million, and an outstanding portfolio amounting to TZS 365 million.

The most recent portfolio, as at March 2012, was amounting to TZS 560 million which is, according to projections, expected to rise to TZS 1.2 billion by the year 2016.

WEDTF has been an Oikocredit partner since July 2012. The partner received a loan of Tzs 250 million for a period of 4 years, for the purpose of on-lending to its clients.

WEDTF is one of the biggest Microfinance institutions operating in Zanzibar and has helped thousands of poor people to fight poverty since its inception. Based on its social impacts and outstanding performances, the government of Zanzibar refers WEDTF as a role model when addressing issues regarding women empowerment and poverty eradication.

The NGO is governed by the board of trustees who are well educated, experienced and committed to ensuring that the NGO meets its overall objectives.
